The Baltimore Ravens have made some great free agency moves this offseason. After a disappointing season of not making the playoffs, General Manager Eric DeCosta has made some notable moves to improve the Ravens roster. Let’s just say he is trying to make sure the defense will be stronger than last season.
His first signing was a big one. He signed Free Safety Marcus Williams, who originally played for the New Orleans Saints. DeCosta signed Williams to a five-year $70 million deal. I personally love this move because it fills one of the Ravens’ major holes–their coverage. In addition, Williams is also a young player, just 25 years old, so the hope is the Ravens will have him on the team for many years to come. True, the Ravens could have had Tyrann Mathieu, who may arguably be the better player, but at 29, his age could make him less valuable for the long term.
For the second signing, the Ravens signed Offensive Tackle Morgan Moses, from the Jets, for a three-year $15 million deal. If you were confused by this signing, you weren’t alone. But with Alejandro Villanueva’s recent retirement, the Ravens had a spot to fill, and Moses is a solid offensive lineman.
In less positive news, the Ravens lost signing Za’Darius Smith after the Von Miller Bills contract. This hurt because he was a former Raven and would have been a great edge rusher, which the Ravens need. However, the Ravens did sign another former Raven, Michael Pierce. Pierce has been a strong player for the Vikings, and now he will bring what he has gained from that team, while easily fitting back in with the Ravens and teaching the younger players new techniques to improve their game.
So, it’s clear that the Ravens have gained several promising players to improve their roster for the upcoming season. Let’s hope these new players improve the overall tackling and run stop defense, major problems the Ravens’ defense had last season.
