Following the news that longtime Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger officially retired, the Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves in need of a quarterback. However, they were unable to trade for some of the “bigger” names because of their high draft, so they have decided to take a chance on Mitchell Trubisky.
Trubisky, who started his career on the Chicago Bears, did better than most people remember. While on the Bears, he had a winning record of 11-5 and took the team to the Playoffs, which is really quite impressive. Unfortunately, the Bears Playoff chances came to an end when the kicker missed a game-winning field goal against the Philidelphia Eagles, but that had nothing to do with Trubisky.
After the 2018-2019 season, however, Trubisky didn’t seem the same. His decision making was questionable and his throws weren’t the most accurate. The Bears ended up giving up on him and recruited Nick Foles to replace him. However, when Foles injured his shoulder in the 2019-2020 season, it was back to Trubisky, who once again got the Bears to the Playoffs, but ultimately, they lost again, this time to the Brew Brees-led Saints. After that loss, Trubisky was eventually released, and he ended up signing with the Buffalo Bills as a backup where he played minimal minutes for the season.
With the Steelers’ current opening for a quarterback, they seem like a good fit for Trubisky because he will have a much better wide receiver core with Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson. Although analysts seem to waver between Trubisky being great for the Steelers or terrible, the Steelers do have a solid head coach in Mike Tomlin, who has never had a losing record, even with a backup quarterback playing. It will be interesting to see what Trubisky, Tomlin, and the rest of the team can do this upcoming season.
