Baker Mayfield has been extremely disrespected this offseason by his own organization. Mayfield has been very good for the Browns. He helped them win multiple games and made their future look promising, something they haven’t always been good at in the past. For one, the Browns went 0-16 a few times before they drafted Mayfield.
The Mayfield-Browns train wreck started when the Browns owner said they wanted a “grown-up” as their quarterback, a clear shot at Mayfield. The Browns then took a private jet to meet Texan quarterback Deshaun Watson to discuss a trade. And they made this interaction very public, seeming not to care how it would look for Mayfield. But when Watson told them no, the Browns had to backtrack and come up with some way of making Mayfield happy again. So, they extended their arms at Mayfield, saying they were committed to having him as their quarterback the upcoming season, but by then, Mayfield was upset with the Browns’ front office and demanded a trade.
But luckily for the Browns, Watson, who was unable to get traded to another team, suddenly told the Browns he was interested in accepting their offer. With that, the Browns wasted no time in trading for him–but the trade did not include Mayfield, leaving him as the backup quarterback. The only problem is with the Browns still paying Mayfield $19 million, they may be forced to release him if he’s just going to sit on the bench.
Mayfield has every right to want out of the Browns. But how this mess gets fixed, will be anyone’s guess.
